ViviendasLeón
Work to alleviate rural poverty in Central America and travel to improve understanding through cultural exchange and service learning.
ViviendasLeón is a non-profit organization whose mission is to eliminate poverty by teaching capacities for self-sufficiency in rural communities and educating our youth as global citizens through service learning travel.
ViviendasLeón has worked in Nicaragua for 15 years, helping people living in rural poverty. Our work focuses on rural communities where we commit to 4 years of programming that teaches social, emotional and technical skills, followed by projects that address the needs of the community. At the same time, we have brought thousands of U.S. students and families to learn about Nicaragua, it’s people and about themselves, while working side by side with rural families on their projects to achieve the goal of improving their lives. The travel program gives students, faculty, and families the opportunity to build intercultural relationships, support rural development directly, and foster their awareness of the world around them.
This year ViviendasLeón is announcing a new program in poverty reduction and education travel to the Mayan highlands region of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. This is a great opportunity for us to continue our mission to eliminate rural poverty and build lasting relationships between countries. We have forged a partnership with an established organization with 20 years of experience in the region, Mil Milagros.
Mil Milagros is a like-minded organization that has deep roots in the region allowing us to increase our impact to more rural communities. We will offer the same elements that make our global education program so successful including homestays, cultural and language immersion, and authentic rural development projects. While the partnership is new, the shared mission and experience in development is consistent with our programs in León.
