When we choose to partner with organizations in our communities, it is important to recognize that there are many different ways of serving and that there is value in all kinds of engagement, provided your relationship is authentic, reciprocal and sustainable.
We are all capable of serving, no matter our ages, abilities or socio-economic class. Whether we share our time, talent or treasure, every single one of us is already empowered to make the world a better place.
While doing something such a stuffing envelopes with fundraising campaign materials may not seem to be as impactful as serving lunch directly to the hungry in a free dining room, one could not happen without the other.
Read over the following descriptors and try to categorize the kinds of service that you and your family may already engage in. Do you notice trends? If so, what might be some reasons for that? Think about what kinds of service you might like to engage in that you don’t already do and seek those out. Talk with your family about how the service that you will be participating in fits into a larger context.
